Assam CM Stirs Controversy with Polygamy Remark, Promises Uniform Civil Code

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sparked controversy with his recent statement targeting All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal regarding polygamy. Sarma suggested that Ajmal should consider marrying before the Lok Sabha elections as polygamy will be banned in Assam once the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is implemented.

Sarma’s remarks, made to reporters, highlighted the BJP government’s plan to introduce the UCC in Assam, following in the footsteps of states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat. The UCC aims to establish uniform laws for all citizens, regardless of religion, concerning aspects such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and more.

The Assam CM’s statement drew attention not only to the impending ban on polygamy but also to the repeal of the ‘Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935’ by the Assam cabinet, a move that has faced criticism from minority leaders.

Badruddin Ajmal, known for his opposition to the UCC, serves as the lone AIUDF member in the Lok Sabha from Dhubri constituency and is seeking re-election in the upcoming polls. Ajmal has labeled the UCC as “anti-Quran and anti-Islamic,” reflecting broader debates around religious laws and civil codes in India.
